Import from amazon? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Hello,

I try to manage my book collection, but I am unable to import data from Amazon:
I have the two amazon ID + secret code requested and put them in the config panel.

In the back end, 'Item / info fields / Parameters info' I can see the book details when I searched for a book, but I'm unable to import anything in the info fields.

In the front end, when I use the 'New item Wizard' I can see the book detail + cover but then when I save it I just have an 'imported tempory name' item with no info retreived from amazon.

I must have missed something, but what ??

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
first of all, since you see the book details in the backend (when searching in the Amazon DB), the webservice access seems to be configured correctly. In the backend, when you look for a webservice item, there is nothing "imported" to the info fields, that is absolutely right (JCollection stores the Amazon id and then fetches the information on the fly when the item is accessed in the frontend). However, when you use the "new item wizard" in the frontend (or the "permanent overwrite" button in the backend), then the fetched infomation is supposed to be stored in the actual item/info set. From the technical side, the new item wizard creates an item with just a temporary name and the Amazon (or eBay or google books) id and then performes a "permanent overwrite" which should overwrite the item information. I'd need a bit more information from your setup to debug this issue, helpful are: PHP version (there are some problems with PHP 5.3 which affect the Joomla XML library) and which browser (did you try different ones?). Also, you can change the debug settings in /administrator/components/com_jcollection/config.jcollection.php - that might give some meaningful errormessage for me.
Regards,
Thorsten.

PS: there is also an issue if you try to create a new item in the frontend with a "registered user" account, this is fixed in the newest version (will be released lated today).

Re: Import from amazon? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
thanks for your feedback
PHP version is either PHP 4.4.9 or PHP 5.2.12.
Browser tested are Firefox 3.6 or IE 8 (same results).
Concerning changing debug setting in the /config.jcollection.php, what do you want me to do ? I've downloaded the file but I don't understand a word in it ! Do you want me to upload it to you ?

BTW, I can now create an item when registred with newest version (...but still empty).

Couldn't it be a misuse of some global parametres or of the 'types' setting where I have a 'Books' type or of the webservice types settings (none)?

Hi,
mh, weird. For the debug settings, have a look at the file and change the "_JC_DEBUG" setting (and possibly the "_JC_VERBOSE" setting) from 0 to 1 on your server. Then check if there are any meaningful error message when trying to import things. Usually the component comes with "good" default settings, so it should work out-of-the-box (except for the Amazon keys, of course). Important for the webservices are the "overwrite" parameters and of course the webservice types, those need to be there.
Regards,
Thorsten.
